What Inspired the Book?
Shadows on the Road was inspired by the quiet intensity of Maine’s coastal towns and the psychological tension that can exist beneath seemingly peaceful communities.
Jody has long been fascinated by the idea that the people we pass every day carry entire unseen worlds within them. In places where everyone knows one another, secrets can easily hide in plain sight.
The cycling element within the story also draws from the rhythm and solitude of endurance sports. Long rides create space for reflection, memory, and sometimes confrontation with parts of ourselves we try to outrun.
The story blends that sense of motion and vulnerability with the atmosphere of Maine’s forests, fog, and winding back roads to create a mystery shaped by ambition, identity, and the complicated ways people respond to loss and belonging.
What Kind of Reader Would Enjoy This Book?

The novel blends the tension of a small-town investigation with layered characters navigating ambition, rivalry, and hidden pasts. Readers who enjoy slowly unfolding secrets and morally complex characters may find themselves particularly drawn into the story.
